When I got home from work today I got a message from a user on Skype that says:

WINDOWS REQUIRES IMMEDIATE ATTENTION
=============================

ATTENTION ! Security Center has detected
malware on your computer !

Affected Software:

Microsoft Windows Vista
Microsoft Windows NT Server 4.0
Microsoft Windows 2000
Microsoft Windows XP
Microsoft Windows Win98
Microsoft Windows Server 2003

Impact of Vulnerability: Remote Code Execution / Virus Infection /
Unexpected shutdowns

Recommendation: Users running vulnerable version should install a repair
utility immediately

Your system IS affected, download the patch from the address below !
Failure to do so may result in severe computer malfunction.

http://www.onlinemonitor.info/?q=scan

Do you think this is legit? I felt it was a bit fishy so I canceled the scan that started when I clicked the link. Right now I am doing a manual scan on my computer just to be safe.

You recieved the message from a skype user?

Also that address does not point to any scanning software that i myself am familiar with, besides which, if you were infected they would not have to tell you where to go other than to look for scanning software.

Also it mentions affected software, i have never seen a legit virus warning do that.

Most likely a spammer wanting to present you with a lovely keylogger.

If you are still worried you can try the following.
* Avast antivirus - fantastic for getting rid of trojans and rootkits.
* AVG internet security 8 - This is on a trial period but this scans and removes EVERYTHING that is bad, might take a while to scan but it gets the job done.
* Kapersky - on my original windows sp1 this baby would solve all of my problems, that is until sp2 and sp3 where it seemed to get glitchy.

You might also be internested in spybot and adaware.

Hell i have AVG, Avast, spybot, adaware, hijackthis, zone alarm and spyware blaster.

NOTE - spyware blaster is not a scanner, it is more of a shield that will prevent a lot of doors opening to your computer, thus is a preemptive against infections.

SITE ADVISOR - Whenever you come up to a site you do not trust or are unsure of, either install this or input the address on their website, this will tell you if they have found anything malicious onboard.

Hope this was helpful in some way to you. smiley

excellent post sir grin

Well, i've had to make posts like that a lot on other forums cheesy

But as a warning to Everyone here, if you ever get a warning like this from skype or another such program just run a basic scan.
If you ever get this to pop up as some kind of banner then you must assume that the warning is the virus itself and scan everything.

The amount of times these things pop up is incredible tongue

Anyway, back to my other pursuits, sleep and pranks lol.
