First i'll tell you how it's done on windows xp, simplest i think.

* I'm gonna assume you know what sound drivers and whatnot you're using.

* If you're using soundmax drivers you'll need to make sure that the option for stereo mix isn't disabled before installation.
Soundmax\SMAXWDM\W2K_XP\AdiHdAud.inf file, find that and open it.

"\Disable, "OutR", 1, 01 ; Disable Stereo Mixer" if you find a line like this that has 1,00 instead of 1,01 on the disable stereo mixer lines, change it so it's 1,01

*if the change was needed then you'll have to reinstall the driver using that edited .inf file.

*then you'll need to go into recording options in sounds and audio devices, then you set that for stereo/wave mix

*you'll need to fiddle with the system volume and stereo/wave mix volumes yourself, open audacity or similar program and set recording to stereo/wave mix. press record and play any sound on the computer to make sure that the program is indeed recording.

if you're gonna use skype, then every time you open it up, you'll have to reset your recording preference to stereo mix, it keeps switching to microphone.

_____________________________

If you're using windows vista, do the same check in the .inf file if it's present.

proceed to the recording device, click on show hidden devices and select stereo mix for default.

i do hope this helps, this allows you to record everything you hear your computer play.
