CBS: Obama Eyeing Internet ID for Americans
QUOTE: "We are not talking about a national ID card," Locke said at the Stanford event. "We are not talking about a government-controlled system. What we are talking about is enhancing online security and privacy, and reducing and perhaps even eliminating the need to memorize a dozen passwords, through creation and use of more trusted digital identities."

http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-501465_162-20027837-501465.html

Okay.....

Firefox and other browsers offer similar services, so this is really unnecessary.  Except now passwords and logins would be put on government file.

Thoughts?

sounds suspicious.

I suppose this will make it easier to catch bad guys, but it also makes it easier for people (including the government to hack into our-anyone's stuff)  sad
honestly I dont like this. ANd I personally never use the "remember youre password thing. Doesn this defeat the entire purpose of passwords?  huh
And its a good exercise for my memory to have lots of passwords.  tongue

Bad idea. I can memorize my own passwords without the federal government's assistance. Don't make a bit of sense to me.  angry

governments trying to run peoples personal lives is an awful thing in my books, next thing you'll need a license to log into the internet

i say keep it out of anyones control. and if you're worryed about hackers don't be a dumbass and click the link "free money" or "wanna fuck tonight, click here!!"

but i can't complain, my government probably thinks the internet is a video game.

Yeah good find, sorry gang.  That's the wrong piece of legislation.  The buzz right now is about SOPA - which will likely be voted on next month.  While it may be well intended to protect intellectual property, it will effectively shut certain sites down - by not allowing people access to them.

Quote: "Depending on who makes the request, the court order could include barring online advertising networks and payment facilitators from doing business with the allegedly infringing website, barring search engines from linking to such sites, and requiring Internet service providers to block access to such sites." - from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stop_Online_Piracy_Act

Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales is gonna shut Wikipedia down tomorrow in protest of the bill.

yeah, but it's also a felony (I think) to falsely accuse a site of the type of piracy meant to be blocked by this legislation

from what I can tell of it this far (and I don't know too much about it), I'm still kind of on the fence

what's the point anyway? are the giant media conglomerates convinced they're actually losing big enough money to lobby for this legislation? I'm inclined to think there's an ulterior motive -- perhaps something buried in the legislation

I signed about four petitions today telling them no on these bills. Its really ridiculous what is in this bill, least in its current form, and will practically end the flow of free information on the internet.

I say no to this, and stick by that. smiley

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:SOPA_initiative/Learn_more

it looks like the petitions and what not helped some, but its not over yet. they still have to vote on the bill. I think as long as enough people oppose it we'll be alright.

Chalk one up for Freedom of Speech! Today the White House responded to two online petitions calling upon the Obama Administration to reject two bills pending before Congress and the Senate. One of those bills, SOPA, the Stop Online Piracy Act is apparently dead now. Instead Obama prefers a more narrowly defined act targeting more specific activities.

The White House issued this statement:

Quote:
"While we believe that online piracy by foreign websites is a serious problem that requires a serious legislative response, we will not support legislation that reduces freedom of expression, increases cybersecurity risk, or undermines the dynamic, innovative global Internet..."
