I agree with the video you posted in the shoutbox a moment ago by the same guy:

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/jc8iCAcFalc&rel=0" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/v/jc8iCAcFalc&rel=0</a>

I don't think we should totally abandon media created by people outside of our immediate circle though -- simply focusing on being more creative ourselves would be a giant step in the right direction

plus, with the internet, we're all much more interconnected, so your immediate circle of associations can be much more diverse

There's a lot to say on the theory of "nothing."

Goddammit I really respect that!  smiley

i just picked up my first mckenna book a couple months ago...

“Ego is a structure that is erected by a neurotic individual who is a member of a neurotic culture against the facts of the matter. And culture, which we put on like an overcoat, is the collectivized consensus about what sort of neurotic behaviors are acceptable.”

"There is a spiritual obligation, there is a task to be done. It is not, however, something as simple as following a set of somebody else's rules." - Terence"

or as David Lynch said in his book...

"I call that depression and anger the Suffocating Rubber Clown Suit of Negativity. It's suffocating, and that rubber stinks. But once you start meditating and diving within, the clown suit starts to dissolve. You finally realize how putrid was the stink when it starts to go. Then, when it dissolves, you have freedom."

A deep thought from still water.

as a frequent cannabis user and occasional dabbler in psychedelics, I'm well aware of mckenna. his descriptions of hallucinogenic experiences were spot on and often very funny, but I don't know how I feel about his overall philosophy. I feel like I'm at a point in my life where embracing the whole hippie "universal conciousness/spirituality" attitude would just make me sink deeper into depression, not pull me out of it.

I think the experience of the "ego death" can be a great thing for the typical "alpha male" guy who's spent his whole life being full of himself, but people like me need to hold on to what little self-esteem we have left.

That's why I do blow.  cheesy

jk...for now.

psychadelics were the catalyst for this alpha male to view his failed mental constructs objectively -- not necessarily a pleasant experience, and certainly not a cure-all, but helpful in at least identifying the problem

because as we all know it's tough to move beyond something if you're not aware of it

I agree with that because if you look at certain customs that I would say are not neurotic like picking up something a stranger dropped and giving it to them (being nice to strangers) or giving something to a friend who gives you things, these are things that are things that everyone has around the world regardless of "culture". Some culture I would say is just a way of doing those things. Of course it goes farther than that.

heres two other great philosophers (not philosophers exaclty, Micheal Chrictons a writer and scientist and so is Marvin Minksy, but they both philosophie, philosy? is that a word?  tongue)
